   painter
   Enguerrand Quarton (also Charonton, Charreton, or Charton) worked in Aix-en-Provence (1444) and settled in Avignon in 1447. Two works that contributed to defining the Provençal style are attributed to him with certainty: La Vierge de miséricorde (1452), on which he collaborated with the painter Pierre Vilatte, and Le Couronnement de la Vierge (1453-54). The vigor of his forms, the treatment of certain faces inspired by Flemish art, and the elegant stylization of design are subordinated to the image of a very personal ensemble; abstract and monumental character of a complex, but clear composition, an order denoting the pictorial adaptation of the architectural composition of the French tympanum. In his countrysides, the use of perspective attests to the Italian influence, but the nature of light, which is used abundantly, appears typically Provençal.
